how to become a leader

Have you ever wondered why some people are alpha and lead the group and others follow? What traits you need to be the leader not the follower?

What separates the leader from the crowd? Have you always wanted to be the man ladies get weak and men get jealous? The one no one can resist and everyone likes to follow?

Every manager and entrepreneur strives to become a good leader. Reaching this role needs a shift in the way you lead as well as in the way you thought. Leadership is about enabling the full potenial in others.

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.

John C. Maxwell

When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

“The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it.

“I think that’s very important and however you learn that, once you learn it, you’ll want to change life and make it better, cause it’s kind of messed up, in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.”

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs puts it right. That what makes a leader, a leader is simply a game changer. Luckily enough I am going to reveal the traits you need to become a successful leader – a Game Changer.

People will like you even more as a leader if you actually lead them to the results. People will respect you even more as a leader if you show that you care about them.

If you ask famous leaders what are the traits to be a successful leader you will get answers like: be consistent, know exactly your goal, have a vision and inspire the people around you.

Great leaders adapt to their surrounding environments and empower the team to succeed together.

so let’s sum up the traits you need and actions you need to take to become a great leader:

Inspire People

Having faith in your beliefs and motivate the people around you makes a leader. Inspire them with your hunger to succeed and they will do follow you. Even the most famous business leaders like Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos have heroes and people whom inspire them.

Enhance Lifes

Great leaders make the hard choice and self-sacrifice in order to enhance the lifes of others. Keep in mind not only your family relys to you, so too – do the families of the people who work for you. Your not only responsible for your life or that of your family members. Your giving great responsibility for every family member of your employees.

Push People to be their best

Push people to be the very best they can be but still make people feel safe and comfortable. It starts with the heart, people gotta love what you stand for in order to follow you and go even beyond their limits because they have faith in you as a leader.

To be an effective leader, you should be confident enough to ensure that other follow you. Have faith in your beliefs and tune out any negative opinion on your long term goals. Having confidence in what you do has an huge impact on your productivity.

A good communicator can be a good leader. Until you clearly communicate your vision to your team, it will be very difficult for you to get the results you want. Words have the power to inspire and motivate people use them wisely in order to achieve your long term goals.

Innovation and Creativity

What separates a leader from a follower? Steve Jobs, the greatest visionary of our time answers this question this way, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Creative thinking and constant innovation is what makes you and your team stand out from the crowd.

Commitment and Passion

Every great leader of our time preaches the same: be passionated about what you do you gotta love what you do on a daily basis to succeed and this is so true. If you get your hands dirty your team is more likely to commit to.

Role Model

Serving as a role model plays a big part in becoming a leader. You need to walk the walk and talk the talk. As a result, group members admire you as a leader and work to emulate these behaviors. If you want to become a better leader, work on modeling the qualities that you would like to see in your team members.

Inspire People

Great leaders don’t motivate – they inspire.

Inspiration is the most important leadership trait, fueled by passion and purpose. You might ask yourself now, what’s the difference between motivation and inspiration? People often use the terms “inspire” and “motivate” interchangeably.

Motivation pushes you to accomplish a task, or work through a difficult event, even when you would rather be doing anything else.

Inspiration pulls you towards something that stirs your heart, mind, or spirit. We are inspired by a person, an event, or a circumstance.

When you are inspired you don’t think about the goal as the end of the road, no you are filled with passion and take action up on yourself. Motivation comes from motive, so you are forced by another person whom motivates you to reach a specific goal. Take Sir Richard Branson founder and owner of the virgin group as an example. Branson is a pioneer in inspiring his employees. He believes companies who are successful in the area of employee motivation hire the type of leaders who “inspire” their teams.

There was a time people thought that being a leader is about charisma only it is greek and means gifted. Today we know the ability to Inspire and Motivate Others is a behavioral skill that anyone can develop.

When you tell leaders to be more inspiring, my experience is that most of time they are confused about what to do. Should they give more “high 5s”?

Hold motivational speeches every wednesday?

No Inspiration comes from within, if your passionated about your goal and ambitious the people around you will notice and follow you. Those who inspire others believe in collective power.

Enhance Lifes

As mentioned before: Keep in mind not only your family relys to you, so too – do the families of the people who work for you. Your not only responsible for your life or that of your family members. Your giving great responsibility for every family member of your employees.

With great power comes great responsibility

You have to sacrifice to enhance the lifes of your employees. An happy employee is a more productive employee. The people around you are more likely to follow and listen if they feel and see your drive and determination, your spirit, your purpose. Make sure to create a working enviroment for your employees that is as awesome as possible so they feel safe and comfortable.

Push People to be their best

There is a big difference in between forcing people to accomplish a certain task or pushing them to become the best they can possibly be. In my experience forcing people is the wrong way as many succesful business leaders relate. If you motivate and inspire your team the right way there is actually no point in putting pressure on them. There’s a fine line between encouraging employees to take their game to the next level and saying something that completely demoralizes them.

So how do you push people to be their best ?

If you want your employees to become better at what they do, you need to set the example and stick to it. No one wants to follow a boss who comes in late and leaves early. Stay in the office longer than anybody else and show how it is done.

You need to regonize your employees achievements. According to researches not even one out of every three workers feels valued at their job. There are a number of different employee regcocnition tactics you can try, including giving out awards, thanking workers publicly, or bringing in snacks.

“As a leader one of the things that’s most important is to know your team needs to see you as confident.”

Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors coach

You don’t come out of the womp of your mama and be confident, no – confidence is a skill that can be learned like any other skill. Yes you heard me right: Confidence can be learned. Knowing what to expect and how and why things are done will add to your awareness and usually make you feel more prepared and ultimately more confident. As Confidence is really important it let’s you tune out negative and bad advice regarding your business and let’s you  lead without doubts. If your team regcognize that you have any doubts they probably will stop following you.

Communication is a core leadership function. You need to think with clarity, express ideas, and share information with your team. Be always straight with your thoughts and tell your team excactly what you want ( not try ) to accomplish. State that you are totally commited to do anything it takes to achieve this specific goal. People around you will get inspired and make a commitment without you forcing them or pushing them in a role.

Listening is a powerful skill as well. A good communicatior is a great leader he listens to his employees problems and comes up with solutions, accepts solutions to specific problems from his team and is a big time team player. When you listen well, you gain a clear understanding of another’s perspective and knowledge.

It is simply impossible to become a great leader without being a great communicator.

Innovation and Creativity

Which companies are the most succesful ? The ones who come up with the innovative ideas and change the game. Same applies to leaders. Those who are game changers and think in a total different way, have the ability to see things from another angle are the most succesful business man.

The companies that have done the best over the long haul are those who are the most creative and innovative.

Commitment and Passion

Being passionate about what you do and truly commit to your goals are the keys to success and become a leader.

Imagine Steve Jobs if he wouldn’t be so passionate about phones and computers that have a high usability Apple wouldn’t be what it is today. He truly commit to his goal to create very usability friendly products in the tech market.

So if you want to be a leader you have to commit truly and entirely to your vision and goal. Commitment starts with a goal and ends with action.

Commitment means your ready to do all it takes to achieve your goal no matter what obstacles you might face.

If you have true passion for what you do and accomplish people are more likely to follow you and see you as their leader. Simply because they see your hunger and passion and it inspires them to follow into your foot steps.

Role Model

Remember you’ve always had role models even back in the day in your childhood you were looking up to batman or superman.

A role model is simply an individual who inspires others and achieve things that no one could believe is even possible for a human being.

Someone who craves the path and shows you the right directions to succeed in life one you try to imitate and adopt his success patterns and the way of thinking about life.

Become a great leader is mostly about become a role model people can look up to and identify with.

Become a great leader is about to become a role model for others inspire them with your immediate action and drive to accomplish the things you are truly to commit and passionate about.  Crave the path for the people around you to follow in your foot steps and push them to be the best version of themselves they could possible be.

A leader is simply an individual who serve the people around him to strive for the best.
