What is SEO ?
SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines.
All search engines have primary search results, talking about Google, Bing and Yahoo just a few to mention, showing the user what the search engine considers as most relevant based on a page ranke system. Note payment isn’t involved.
What goes into SEO ?
To understand what SEO really means, let’s break that phrase down into the parts:
–Organic Results. Organic traffic is any traffic that you don’t have to pay for.
– Quality of traffic. You can attract all the visitors in the world, but if they coming to your site because google tells them you sell washmachines, but you only give advice regarding wash machines, that is not quality traffic. Of course you want to attract visitors who are genuinely interested in products you offer.
– Quantity of traffic once you have the right visitors clicking through from the search engines results, more traffic is better.
How SEO works?
Have you ever stopped to consider what’s behind those magical lists of links that Google and Co provide you once typed in a search term? Ever asked yourself why those results are so accurate ?
Google and any other search engine have so called crawlers, tiny programms that have only one task,
Jump from link to link in the internet and collect all links and information possible and write them into a database, let’s stick with the google example. From all those links and content Google build an index for their search results. That index is then fed through an algorithm that tries to match all that data with your query.
There is a lot of factors that go into a search engines algorithm, here is the relevance to each:
How does Google rank pages?
Google promotes pages to the top of its rankings that are authoritative. So it is your job to create pages people can benefit of, write informative articles and proof that you are well versed in your niche or topic. Over Time Google picks up on those authority signals from social shares and backlinks. This will create a strong and sustainable Google rank.
In order to really learn what is SEO ( search engine optimization is about ) you need to learn and understand every aspect of it, let’s break it down and start mastering SEO.
-Building a SEO friendly site
– Content and related markup
– Creating Backlinks
– On-site topics
Building a SEO friendly Site
One of the most critical errors business make is ignoring SEO in the web design process. Large gaffes in design can cause long term traffic loss.
A lot of business owners make the mistake of OVER-SEOing, there is no need to put your keyword into your domain name, as its most likely anyways not available anymore or you can only purchase it for a high price. When using multi-word URLs, the industry standard is to use dashes rather than underscores.
Simple and Descriptive Navigation
You want your navigation structure as simple, effiecient for google and your visitors to follow. Avoid overloaded menus as they irritate the user and he probably won’t stay for long on your site. Typically site will place their main navigation menu across the top of the page or vertically down the left side of the page. Many case studies have shown that these positions work best and provide the most usability.
Dropdown and flyout menus are okay, but should be used with care as they can be more difficult for human and robot visitors to navigate. Always keep the number of menu items manageable 6-7 is ideal. You don’t want to overwhelm new visitors with unecessary menu options.
Resize your images, rather than shrinking them in the source code, as this can significantly increase page load times. This is really important as slower page load speed has been linked to worse user experience and organic search rankings. The alt image text is also still important. So remember to incorporate your keywords into your logo image and every other graphic that you include in your site.
Ensure that your visitors can properly access your site regardles which device they’re on. A responsive website design is a priority. No one likes to visit a site and can not read your articles cause the viewport is layed out for computers. You could have two versions of your website, a mobile friendly and a layout for computers. I would not recommend that as you need to maintain two sites.
Currently Google isn’t using social signals from instagram, facebook and twitter. However the indirect benefits are obvious, in order to build a reachment and and increase your search engine rankings.
Make sure you have easy to find social media share buttons to make it as easy as possible for your visitors and loyal readers to share your content.
Content and related markup
SEOs have been talking about structured data ever since Google, Bing, Yahoo! and Yandex got together in 2011 to create a standardized list of attributes and entities which they all agreed to support, and which became known as Schema.org. There are three supported syntaxes:
And two common vocabularies which can be used with these syntaxes: Schema.org and Microformats.org. When we talk about structured data for SEO, we’re usually talking about Schema.org as it is the most commonly used approach to strcutured markup for SEO.
You can also implement this markup in different ways using syntaxes. Schema.org recommends the best ways to add markup to your site are either through using the Microdata format or JSON-LD.
Microdata markup integrates your structured data within the main HTML of the page.
Google’s JSON-LD support has improved and is now their recommended approach. Microdata approach was orginally the recommended one for SEO purposes.
